- Description
- Federal Business Opportunities synopsis for NRA-02-OBPR-02, Research Opportunities for Ground-Based Research in Space Radiation Biology and Space Radiation Shielding Materials: This National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Research Announcement (NRA) solicits proposals for ground-based research in space radiation biology and space radiation shielding materials. This research will utilize beams of high-energy heavy nuclei produced at the Booster Applications Facility (BAF) and the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). These beams simulate the high-energy, high-charge (HZE) components of galactic cosmic rays that constitute the biologically most significant component of space radiation. BAF is a new $34 million irradiation facility at BNL, funded by NASA, and expected to start delivering beams for experiments in Fall/Winter of 2003. This research supports NASA's mission and the Office of Biological and Physical Research (OBPR). All participants in this NRA are strongly encouraged to promote general scientific literacy and public understanding of life sciences, the space environment, and the OBPR programs through formal and informal education opportunities. Where appropriate, supported investigators will be required to produce, in collaboration with NASA, a plan for communicating their work to the public. This NRA and other relevant information will be available electronically via the Internet starting August 30, 2002 at: http://research.hq.nasa.gov/code_u/nra/current/NRA-02-OBPR-02/index.html The solicitation will be open for the period through November 25, 2002; proposals may be submitted at any time throughout the period. Paper copies of the Announcement are available starting August 30, 2002 to those who do not have access to the Internet by calling (202) 479-9030 x277 and leaving a voice mail message. Please leave your full name, address with zip code, telephone number with area code, and the NRA number (NRA-02-OBPR-02). The technical point of contact for this effort is: Dr. David L. Tomko, Enterprise Scientist, Code UB, Bioastronautics Research Division, NASA Headquarters, Washington, DC 20546. This notice constitutes a NASA Research Announcement as contemplated in FAR 6.102 (d) (2). Proposal due date is November 25, 2002.
