- Description
- The National Cancer Institute (NCI), Tobacco Control Research Branch (TCRB), Division of Cancer Control and Populations Sciences (DCCPS) plans to enter into a sole source contract with The Miriam Hospital, Centers for Behavioral & Preventive Medicine, Lifespan Academic Medical Center & Brown University, 164 Summit Avenue, Providence, RI 02906 to prepare a database of investigators, interventions, and instruments used in tobacco cessation and reductions programs. Research for this database will include those studies that utilize pharmaceutical products as the focus or as adjuncts with other interventison for tobacco cessation or reduction. Tobacco control research is a major focus of the NCI. There currently is no database of ongoing tobacco control research programs that includes work sponsored by the variety of non-government organizations. Such a database would help NCI in determining how best to apply its tobacco control resources. The Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine (CBPM) at Brown Medical School has been a major contributor to tobacco control research over the past two decades. Within CBPM, The Nicotine and Tobacco Research Center continues to conduct numerous research studies, ranging from investigations of biobehavioral mechanisms and genetics of tobacco addictions to public health intervention and policy evaluations. The CBPM faculties maintina valuable contacts with other tobacco researchers and communication networks, which will be important to this project. Judith DePue, Ed.D, MPH, will manage the work of this contract, with ongoing collaboration and oversight by Dr. Niaura. Dr. DePue has been involved in tobacco resarch for 20 years as a project manager and investigator, as well as Co-Investigator on a NIDA-funded project "Immunizing Youth Against Tobacco Use", NCI funded TTURC, Project 3, "Efficiency of Sustained Cessation for Population" and complete NCI-funded "Helping Parent in the Pediatric ER to Quit Smoking. This expertise makes Dr. DePue and Dr. Niaura uniquely qualified to develop the NCI/TCRB research database. The Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine, is the only company known to the government that can provide the required services as indicated within.
