Description
The Bureau of Reclamation is seeking sources for a requirement to replace the existing hydroelectric generator and associated step-up transformer at the Folsom powerplant with a generator that can produce the same power output and can be directly connected to the high voltage circuit in the Folsom Switchyard. The existing generator is 3-phase rated at 69 MVA, 0.96pf, 13.8-kV but capable of 71.7 MVA continuously. The step-up transformer is a 3-phase, 13.6-kV to 115-kV rated 66 MVA. The replacement generator will be rated at 71.7 MVA 0.96 pf and will be capable of being directly connected to the 115-kV switchyard. Reclamation has determined that replacement of the existing generator and transformer with a high voltage generator will result in financial economies through reduced equipment replacement and maintenance costs and higher efficiency, and will be environmentally safer to operate. The existing equipment was originally installed in 1955. The generator was last rewound in 1972 by Westinghouse. The unit is operated as a peaking generator with two or more starts and stops per day. The efficiency of the existing generator has been tested at 98.2%. The new generator is expected to achieve an efficiency of at least 98.5% The required work includes manufacturing, furnishing, and installing all necessary generator and ancillary components from the turbine shaft, up to and including the high voltage bushing of the existing115-kV switchyard unit breaker. The work also includes a new excitation system and generator protection system. Since the powerplant is an integral part of the local electrical system and is necessary to ensure the system's reliability, the period of time that the unit is taken out of service for the installation must be minimized. As part of the installation, the contractor shall disassemble, remove, and dispose of the components not required for the replacement.
