Description
For the program year 2003, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ), Asian Longhorn Beetle (ALB) Program will be chemically treating thousands of potentially infested trees at designated areas in New York and Chicago. APHIS intends to approve the application device that offers the best value to the ALB Program. Devices will be evaluated on the following performance objectives: (1) ability to deliver the specific systemic pesticide in a manner that results in it translocating to the twig and leaf tissue throughout the tree crown, (2) ability of the device to regulate outflow pressure, (3) capability of the device to deliver specific dosages, (4) ease of replenishing or switching chemical bottles, (5) reliability, and (6) cost efficiency in delivering chemical at pressures that do not harm hardwood type tree species. APHIS has been considering devices produced or developed by Arborjet, Arborsystems, Davey Tree Expert Company, J.J. Mauget Co., and Sidewinder Injection Technology Pty. Ltd., however, application devices produced and developed by other firms may receive consideration for use in calendar year 2003 provided the firm submits a sample of their applicator to the USDA, APHIS, PPQ, Otis Plant Protection Laboratory no later than close of business January 21, 2003. APHIS' selection of the device to be used by government contractors on Spring 2003 ALB Control Treatments will be made within 2 weeks thereafter. For additional information contact Robert J. (Bob) Crowther at 612/336-3205.
