Description
The Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) is soliciting interest from manufacturers of prime movers and drive trains for the electrical utility industry to assist in developing a novel variable speed drive system suitable for very high horsepower/very high torque electrical power generator applications. A bench scale model demonstrated that the proposed design is simple, scalable, low cost, and potentially very efficient. The purpose of the joint collaboration would be to develop, test and evaluate a small-scale version in a 250KW system. With successful demonstration, a pilot scale application is proposed. The technology in its most basic form is limited to small speed changes that yield a 40% change, but a more evolved design can achieve up to a 100% speed change in a single stage. Application is ideally suited to infinitely fine tune driver speeds while maintaining synchronous generator speeds in turbine driven systems, such as steam, wind, gas and water, and in systems with piston engine drivers. Knowledge and experience in working with prime mover, drive trains, and utility power plants would be beneficial. If the development project is successful, the technology would be available for license to the party or parties providing funding and in-kind support. Point of Contact: Philip B.
