Description
The Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in conjunction with this solicitation will be offering potential contractors the opportunity to take the challenge exams for the following Navy Crane Center (NCC) certifications: Crane Mechanic, Crane Electrician, Mechanical Inspector, Electrical Inspector and Load Test Director. The challenge exams are being offered on a one-time basis at the NUWC Division Newport location. The time frame for the exams will be June 2-4 2003. The class schedule will be as follows: June 2nd, Crane Electrician and Crane Electrical Inspector; June 3rd, Crane Mechanic and Crane Mechanical Inspector; June 4th (A.M. ONLY), Load Test Director. All morning exams will begin at 8:00 A.M. with varying completion times. Afternoon exams will begin at 1:00 P.M. with varying completion times. Lunch break will be from 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M. The Government will not provide lunch. Contractors may contact Jeanne Gunning at (401) 832-2531 to register for the challenge exams and obtain driving directions. Final confirmations will be made via e-mail or fax. CONTRACTORS WILL BE REGISTERED ON A FIRST COME FIRST SERVE BASIS UNTIL CLASS SIZE HAS BEEN REACHED. CONTRACTORS ARE LIMITED TO REGISTER UP TO THREE (3) EMPLOYEES PER CHALLENGE EXAM. Contractors may place their names on a waiting list in case of cancellations, but no guarantee will be made that room will become available. Contractors should be prepared to provide access information for entrance onto the site. The following information will be required: Contractors Full Name, Place of Birth, Date of Birth, Social Security Number and a signed statement that they are United States Citizens. Access to NUWC Division Newport is restricted to U.S. Citizens. Contractors taking the Crane Electrician and Crane Electrical Inspector's exam may bring the National Electric Code Book with them for use during the exam. No other materials will be allowed during examinations. Contractors are urged to visit the Navy Crane Center Web Site at http://ncc.navfac.navy.mil to view a downloadable copy of the NAVFAC P-307, Management of Weight Handling Equipment. PRIOR KNOWLEDGE AND FAMILIARITY WITH THE NAVFAC P-307 IS CONSIDERED A BENEFICIAL PREREQUISITE FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE CHALLENGE EXAMS. The challenge exams will be timed and strict adherence to established timeframes will be kept. In no event will the exam timeframes overlap. Contractors may register for all five challenge exams, but must be advised they will be required to pass the prerequisites in order to obtain each certificate. In other words, if the contractor takes the Crane Mechanic challenge test and fails but also takes the Crane Mechanical Inspector test and passes, they will not be allowed to perform the duties of the Crane Mechanical Inspector until they successfully pass the Crane Mechanic course. Section 13, Training and Qualifications, of the NAVFAC P-307, indicates the courses available and the prerequisite for each. Contractor should refer to the Table 13-1 and the notes to determine which exams and prerequisites they require. Two points of interest: Contractors taking the challenge exams are cautioned that this is a one shot offer, if they fail the challenge exam, they will be required to take the full Navy Crane Center Course. Course schedules can be viewed on the NCC web site. Contractors taking the Load Test Director exam will not be allowed to perform the function of the Load Test Director until they have passed the prerequisite General Crane Safety Course (40 Hours). There are no challenge exams for this course. Contractors may take the exam, but certification will be withheld until successful completion of all the prerequisites. Certificates issued by the Government for use in performing work on Navy owned cranes shall be used strictly for the intent of compliance with Navy requirements and shall not be used to represent the individuals in any non-Navy enterprise and do not constitute and endorsement by the Government.
