Description
Request for Information /Shipping Containers. The Department of Veterans Affairs, AFMLO/VA Special Services, is soliciting information and comments from manufacturers, integrators, service providers, and other interested parties concerning the availability of Commercial Shipping Containers as follows: Load bearing capability must be equal to or greater than 1222 lbs (lids are of special interest, since they seem to be the weakest and absorb the majority of the weight when items other than a similar container are packed on top.); Securable lids to ensure they will not be blown off by the wind; Rodent/insect proof (drain holes in the bottom, holes in the sides for venting, etc. lead to intrusion by vermin); Water resistant; Fold down access doors on containers 24 inches or taller that can be opened with the lid on so you can access it even when it?s on a pallet; Dual use bins that can be reconfigured into shelving once deployed; Fold down design to minimize storage space when not being used; Color coded to offer easy identification by project; Placard space (flat area for labels) on two adjacent sides of bin; Forklift ports on all sides; Need to offer a few standard sizes of box to fit odd shaped equipment (overall usable pallet dimension is 84X104X96) for example: Box that is 104X42X48 (for litters, stands, lengthy items); Box that is 52X42X48 (to fit 4 side by side, 2 rows high, eight boxes total); Box that is 52X42X24 (to fit 4 side by side, 4 rows high, 16 boxes total) or a combination of the above boxes customized to fit the UTC; Provide specifications on when container breaks/cracks from extreme cold, melt/warp from extreme heat; Ability to be combined to make a bigger box for things like bruce lights, tent poles, ladders, etc. Strength/integrity once they are combined; Has handles that are integrated so it could be lifted and moved without a forklift; Does not retain water; Commercially available. The manufacturer is also encouraged to submit their own suggestions that are equal to or exceed the aforementioned specifications. Responses to the RFI must be submitted in writing by the close of business on October 10, 2003. Mail two copies of your responses to Department of Veterans Affairs, AFMLO/VASS, ATTN: Mr. N. Dale Wakefield, Jr., 1423 Sultan Drive, Suite 200, Fort Detrick, MD 21702-5006. Phone (301)619-7098. Collect calls will not be accepted.
