Description
The USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Fort Collins, CO, intends to negotiate with IBP-Tyson, Lexington, NE on a sole-source basis for research samples of packing plant beef samples. Those beef animal packing plants interested in being considered for this project shall send a qualifications statement by November 13, 2003, to one of the following: Fax 970-492-7031; E-mail dick.jansen@ars.usda.gov; or mail to USDA, ARS, NPA, 2150 Centre Avenue, Building D, Suite 310, Fort Collins, CO 80526-8119. The U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (MARC), Clay Center, NE, is seeking to conduct a scientific quality cutting test evaluation of the MARC beef carcass image analysis system and to purchase cuts from the carcasses used in that experiment. The experimental protocol for the project entitled "Prediction of Beef Carcass Cut-out Yields Using the MARC Beef Image Analysis System" requires the evaluation of beef carcasses with the MARC Beef Image Analysis System and the purchase of cuts from the left side of 266 carcasses representing a diverse selection grid including U.S. Choice and U.S. Select carcasses. Therefore, the source for these cuts must be equipped with the MARC Beef Image Analysis System and located close enough to MARC to permit completion of data collection. To evaluate the feasibility of this system to predict beef carcass cut-out yields under commercial processing conditions, the plant must grade carcasses at a rate of at least 300 head per hour. Moreover, the plant must be willing to hold the carcasses after grading to allow MARC personnel sufficient time and space to collect quality and yield grade factors. Additionally, the plant must be willing to collect scientific quality cutting test yields including accurate capture of all trim and evaluation of proximate composition. The plant must be willing to provide the necessary labor to insure collection of accurate cut-out data. Cuts from these carcasses must be purchased and transported to MARC for further data collection.
