- Description
- As part of the Department of Energy?s (DOE) Nanoscale Science Research Centers Program, Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) plans to construct the Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM). The mission of the CNM is to advance the science of nanoscale materials by supporting world-class interdisciplinary and collaborative research in a user-facility environment. The CNM will be an approximately 87,000 gross square feet (GSF), two-story facility housing cleanrooms, laboratories, offices, and conference/assembly areas. The CNM will be attached to the existing Advanced Photon Source ring building at ANL. The CNM cleanroom space is of fundamental importance to the mission of the facility. The CNM will have approximately 11,000 GSF of ISO Class 5 and ISO Class 6 cleanrooms in a bay-and-chase configuration. To support planned semiconductor fabrication-type research and development activities, which will involve the use of hazardous production materials (HPM), the cleanrooms are designed as an International Building Code, High-Hazard, Group H-5 occupancy. The other areas of the building include: ? ~13,000 GSF of research laboratories, ? ~33,000 GSF of offices, conference rooms, and assembly areas. ? ~30,000 GSF of facility and operations support spaces, including a mezzanine above the cleanrooms and laboratories for MEP support. A number of the CNM spaces will house very sensitive equipment that require the most stringent criteria for controlling such factors as vibration and electro-magnetic interference. The construction of the CNM must support these criteria. Safety is of paramount importance in the construction and operation of the CNM. The CNM project team is dedicated to a construction safety goal of zero lost workday cases. Safe work practices will be integrated into all aspects of the construction process. Due to the highly specialized, technical nature of the facility, and the fact that proper construction phase implementation of all criteria is fundamental to the mission of the facility, ANL will implement a prequalification process to ensure invited general contractors have the requisite capabilities and experience, as determined by ANL. A key focus of ANL?s evaluation will be a contractor?s track record of successfully completing projects similar to the CNM, as described above. Jacobs Facilities, Inc. (Jacobs) is under contract as Construction Manager supporting the CNM project. Jacobs will implement the prequalification process with ANL, and will support the procurement and construction phases.
