There is potential for adoption and production for armed service use. The tactical employment of the 200-round Soft Pack will be to replace and/or supplement the current 200-round hard plastic ammunition magazine currently used with the M249/MINIMI. The main objective is to obtain a 200-round Soft Pack that will be more durable and provide improved retention to the weapon under field conditions while reducing ammunition ?rattling? noise levels when employed in a sustained combat environment. The 200-round Soft Pack must attach directly to the standard 5.56mm, M249 Squad Automatic Weapon and require no additional equipment or hardware for attachment. The 200-round Soft Pack shall be capable of carrying 200 rounds of linked 5.56mm NATO ammunition. The 200-round Soft Pack shall be comparable in size to the current hard plastic magazine, and should be re-usable a minimum of 50 times.
