Description

Cochiti Mesa Fuel Break, Jemez Ranger District, Santa Fe National Forest. This fuelbreak is being constructed to reduce the fire hazard surrounding the community of Cochiti and to construct a strategic point of defense where fire fighters can work safely in the event of a wildfire. When the work is completed the forest within the project area will be open and spacing will be irregular to create a natural appearance. The largest, healthiest trees will be left with an average of 20-feet between the tree crowns (spacing may range from 10-30 feet) and an average of 25-feet between groups of trees (spacing may range from 20-30 feet). The appearance of the forest will be irregular, with large healthy trees dominating the landscape and a lesser representation of smaller, healthy trees so that multiple size and age classes are represented. Due to the proximity and alignment with homes, all slash will be treated at the time of fuelbreak construction. Slash less than 5” in diameter must be removed or chipped or otherwise masticated on site. Material greater than or equal to 5” in diameter may be either removed or remain on site for public firewood collection.
