- Description
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), Molecular Medicine and Virology Section (MMVS), Laboratory of Molecular Medicine and Neuroscience (LMMN) plans to procure, on a sole source basis from Carl Zeiss MicroImaging, Inc (One Zeiss Drive, Thornwood, NY 10594), an Apotome-upgrade for an existing Zeiss Axiovert 200 microscope that will convey confocal imaging capabilities. The North American Industry Classification System Code for Carl Zeiss MicroImaging, Inc is 334516 and the business size standard is 500 employees. The supplies and services herein are being procured in accordance with the simplified acquisition procedures authorized by FAR Part 13. The Laboratory of Molecular Medicine and Neuroscience (LMMN), investigates the biology of viral infections in nervous system cells derived from human brain and the molecular regulation which controls cellular and viral gene expression. This request is necessary to allow for more accurate and detailed examinations of the virus-cell interactions central to LMMN studies. Lytic JCV infection of oligodendrocytes causes the fatal demyelinating disease, Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML), which occurs almost exclusively in immune compromised individuals, particularly with AIDS. Equipment required for this request includes an Apotome- upgrade for the existing Zeiss Axiovert 200M inverted microscope, Axiovision software upgrade modules, a Zeiss imaging workstation, and computer hardware add-ons (memory upgrade, RAID controller, and 160 GIG hard disk). The Zeiss Apotome-upgrade with imaging accessories will advance the existing Zeiss Axiovert 200M inverted microscope with confocal capabilities. This will eliminate the need to purchase a separate and significantly more costly confocal microscope. The acquisition will enhance acuity and accuracy of imaging on the existing scope, by conveying abilities to precisely locate objects of interest within a cell and determine whether multiple objects of interest are co-localized. Carl Zeiss MicroImaging is the only source known to NINDS that can provide the instrument required for the research. This instrument is vastly important to the LMMN's study of virus-cell interactions. There are no other known companies that manufacture the Apotome, or comparable imaging technologies that work with the existing microscope. The Apotome-upgrade hardware and software included in this requisition is patented by Carl Zeiss MicroImaging, Inc. The Zeiss Apotome-upgrades are the only components made that convey confocal abilities to the existing Axiovert 200M microscope. This is not a request for competitive quotation. However, if any interested party believes it can perform the above requirement, it may submit a statement of capabilities. The statement of capabilities and any other furnished information must be in writing and must contain material in sufficient detail to allow NCI to determine if the party can perform this requirement. Capability statements must be received in the contracting office by 1:00 PM EST, September 10, 2004. If you have any questions they must be submitted in writing to Malinda Holdcraft, Purchasing Agent, at holdcram@exchange.nih.gov or by fax 301-402-4513. A determination by the Government not to compete this proposed requirement based upon responses to this notice is solely within the discretion of the Government. Information received will be considered solely for the purpose of determining whether to conduct a competitive procurement. Please state solicitation number NCI-40145-NG on all correspondence.
