Description
The US Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service in Parlier, Ca. has a requirement for an elemental analysis system will be mounted on and used with the existing Hitachi S-3500N Scanning Electron Microscope. This piece of equipment will allow for the rapid detection and quantification of elements of atomic number greater than boron in biological specimens. Detector. is a room temperature detector that does not require constant cooling with liquid nitrogen like a traditional Si(Li) detector. The detector will provide better FWHM resolution, and give better detection limits, meaning will be able examine samples that contain carbon. Also the speed at which one will be able to collect a spectra will be reduced exponentially. The Si(Li)-type detector is only cable of 3000 counts per second, but the QDD is cable of over 100,000 cps. VideoSEM ? This feature allows a digital movie to be made and saved in an AVI format. The ability to generate movies that show different perspectives of the sample in relation to the elemental analysis of the sample can greatly further the understanding of the specimen?s elemental make up. 3D Visualization and mapping? This feature can show the topography of the sample and the elemental make up of the sample in relation to the specimen topography. ChemType ? This is similar to a function known as particle count, but more is more advanced. After it has identified a particle (bright, or dark) it then performs spectral analysis on it to determine what is its composition. Softtware license agreement ? This will allow us to install the Evex Software on other machines such as the one in my office, so the SEM/EDS system could be used for remote analysis thus freeing up the microscope ? x-ray detector for examination of other specimens. A RFQ is not available for this notice the USDA plans on negotiating with Evex (Princeton, NJ) directly. Interested firms are encouraged to present proposal to the attention of Fred Gifford as list above. See number note 22.
