- NAICS Code: 541710 The Clinical Research Branch (CRB), Human Studies Division (HSD) of the National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (NHEERL), Office of Research and Development (ORD) at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is seeking an undergraduate student to provide services under a contractual agreement to assist in the acquisition of information on the effects of particulate matter (PM) and its associated metals on gene and protein expression in cultured human airway epithelial cells. The student contractor must have completed at least two years of undergraduate work with emphasis on studies in biology and chemistry. The student contractor should have at least two years of hands-on work experience in clinical and basic laboratories and must be familiar with basic laboratory health and safety requirements. The student contractor shall: 1) isolate RNA from PM or metal-exposed cells and perform PCR to determine which genes are up- or down-regulated after exposure; and 2) isolate proteins from PM or metal-exposed cells and perform Western blot to determine which proteins are up- or down-regulated after exposure. The period of performance will begin approximately March 14, 2005 and end approximately March 13, 2006 with an option for an additional 6 months period of performance through September 30, 2006. The optional period of performance will be exercised at the discretion of the Government. It is anticipated the student contractor will work an average of 15 hours per week during the remainder of the academic year and 40 hours a week during the summer recess (approximately June through August); thereafter the student contractor can work up to 40 hours a week to the end of the performance period of the contract. The principal duty station location is the EPA Human Studies Facility, 104 Mason Farm Road, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Work will be performed primarily in a laboratory.
