Description
The Santa Maria Airport District (District) is interested in creating California tiger salamander aquatic habitat on the Airport property. The District would like to convene a team of local experts, including but not limited to, a hydrologist, geologist, and biologist, to develop a protocol for California tiger salamander breeding pond creation. The District would like to aid in the development of the protocol by offering their property for pond creation efforts. The team of experts would be chosen in February of 2005, and initial discussions and site visits to the District's property would begin in March. Pond creation efforts would begin during the dry season (June-September 2005). Providing funds for these efforts would aid in the development of a template or protocol for future efforts to create and enhance aquatic habitat for the California tiger salamander. These efforts would work towards the conservation and recovery of the California tiger salamander in Santa Barbara County. The restoration activities resulting from the funding of this project will improve our relationships with the District and other local governments in the City of Santa Maria and Santa Barbara County by working in partnership with their constituents to conserve and restore habitat for the California tiger salamander and thereby promote species recovery and decrease the perception of regulatory burdens.
