Description
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) plans to negotiate and award a follow-on contract on a sole-source basis with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in accordance with FAR 6.302. The objective of this 6-month procurement is to conduct additional comparative tests on MIT???s patented compact plasma fuel reformer (plasmatron) using different alternative fuels. This MIT project, ongoing since May 1999, is experimentally investigating and characterizing the use of a plasmatron reformer, which generates a hydrogen gas from various transportation fuels, to both reduce emissions from diesel engines, in order to meet stricter emission limits for all heavy trucks and buses, and to improve fuel efficiencies. The proposed additional experimental work will build upon the previous DOE funded efforts in plasmatron fuel reformer technology at MIT.
