Description
Notice of intent to negotiate a sloe source contract with Universita Degli Studi Di Torino, located in Torino, Italy for NOAA, National Marine Fisheries Service to assess the effectiveness of circle hooks on both target and by-catch species in a swordfish longline fishery in the Channel of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea. In order to directly involve fishermen, the AGCI Pesca (Italian general association of fishing cooperatives, one of the most important Italian professional fishermen corporation) will be a partner in this project. Working with commercial fishermen, researchers from the University of Torino will test circle hooks involving at least 2 relatively small (<10 m) commercial longline fishing boats. The experiments will be conducted in areas where loggerhead bycatch in longline gear is known to be high (hotspot). Circle hooks will be tested by alternating 1 circle and 2 jig hooks along an entire set for the duration of the trip. A trained observer will be on board to collect catch data during experimental fishing trials. For all landed target and bycatch species, the observer will record basic measurement information. Additionally, the observer will record the type of hook responsible for hooking, relationship of hook to float, as well as hook location on a turtle?s body (e.g. flipper, lower jaw).
