- Description
- In accordance with Simplified Acquisition Procedures the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Cancer Institute (NCI), Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS), Applied Research Program (ARP), intends to procure on a sole-source basis with the Regents of the University of California, Center for Health Policy and Public Health Institute, Los Angeles, CA 90095 for analyses of California Health Interview Survey-Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CHIS-CAM) data to explore the impact of ethnic and racial status, acculturation, and other socio-demographic factors on CAM utilization and resistance to acknowledging CAM use to physicians. The Center for Health Policy Research at the University of California at Los Angeles, conducted a series of surveys examining health behaviors in California. These include the 2000 California Health Interview Survey-Cancer Control Topical Module (2000 CHIS-CCTM), the California Health Interview Survey in 2001(CHIS 2001) and the California Health Interview Survey-Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (CHIS-CAM) in 2002. CHIS-CAM, a follow-back study to targeted individuals who responded to the CHIS Adult core survey, collected extensive information on CAM use among those with cancer, non-cancer, and chronic illnesses other than cancer, to compare and contrast this usage with that of the general population. The study collected data from 9,187 people (2,071 had cancer) who agreed to be re-contacted from CHIS-2001. The purpose of this project is to analyze key issues of interest to the NCI within CHIS-CAM data. The first will address utilization of ?ethnic specific? CAM modalities as opposed to other CAM modalities by Latinos, Asian Americans, and African Americans. The second will address resistance to the disclosure of CAM use to physicians among those with cancer and other chronic conditions. The third will examine how such resistance is related to demographics, socioeconomic status, health care access and use, and cultural characteristics. Analyses of these data is crucial, as the size and diversity of the racial/ethnic groups in the CHIS-CAM sample will help NCI to ascertain use of CAM among racial/ethnic minority populations that are insufficiently represented in current national surveys. The work to be carried out under this project will require that analyses be conducted using a data set that combines variables from two separate studies: CHIS 2001 and CHIS-CAM. The University of California, School of Public Health, Los Angeles designed and collected the CHIS-CAM study as well as the CHIS 2001 study and they are the only organization that has the data that is required for this study. The University of California at Los Angeles is the only known source to the NCI Researcher who has the data to complete this project. This is not a solicitation for competitive quotations. However, if any interested party believes it can meet the entire above requirement, they may submit a statement of capabilities. All information furnished shall be in writing and must contain sufficient detail to allow the NCI researcher to determine if it can meet the requirements of this synopsis. An original and one copy of the capability statements must be received in the Contracting Office by 1PM EDT (local Washington, D.C. time) on September 1, 2005. Faxed and emailed capability statements are NOT authorized. All questions must be in writing and may be emailed to Debbie Moore at dm170b@nih.gov or faxed (301) 402-4513.
