Description
Sandia National Laboratories, the lead research and development laboratory for the Department of Energy?s physical security needs, is looking for one or more companies in the trace detection market to engage in commercialization of Sandia?s portable MicroHound ? system. This portable chemical detection technology is especially applicable to the detection of explosives and narcotics but may also be useful for the detection of chemical agents and toxic industrial chemicals (TIC). Sandia developed this technology with light weight, sensitivity, ease of use, speed, and accuracy in mind, and as new technologies have become available the system has been improved. Thus, the base capabilities have been retained as emerging technologies have improved the system?s performance. It is expected that successful partners will license Sandia?s existing technology and will work with Sandia to improve and optimize the MicroHound ? system for various markets (i.e., first responders, explosives, narcotics, TICs, etc.). Because of this expectation, potential partners must document their ability to move similar products to market and demonstrate that they have the resources and expertise to design, develop, manufacture, distribute, market, and service fully functional trace detection systems. Sandia also expects successful partners to commercialize the entire MicroHound ? system and not to focus primarily on individual components. Sandia will give preference to commercial system integrators with well-documented experience in trace detection of explosives and narcotics, and companies with successful product offerings. Sandia anticipates granting one or more licenses, up to and including exclusive rights, for the MicroHound ? technologies to qualified participants. Sandia licenses typically include up-front licensing fees (a portion of which may cover Sandia?s technical assistance to the partner), royalties, annual minimums, and performance milestones. Successful partners may license rights to several issued patents, patents pending, and copyrighted works related to the subject technology. The MicroHound ? is a handheld system combining, in a single platform small chemical sensors with large-volume sampling and preconcentration to detect low levels of chemicals of interested such as common explosives and narcotics. As an integrated package, the MicroHound ? operates in either of two modes: contactless vapor mode or swipe mode. In vapor mode, the sampling unit draws in a large volume of air and collects heavy organic compounds from the air stream onto a filter. In swipe mode, the operator swipes a suspicious object?s surface and places the filter in a holder. The MicroHound ? system incorporates patented leading edge technologies to enhance the collection and identification of explosives and narcotics. To express your interest in this technology transfer opportunity, please respond by mail or fax to Teresa Montoya by October 21, 2005 at: Sandia National Laboratories, MS 0115, P.O. Box 5800, Albuquerque New Mexico 87185-0115. Fax (505) 844-8011. Please indicate the date and title of the FBO notice and describe the manner in which your firm will successfully bring the MicroHound? technology to market. This is not a federal government procurement and therefore there will be no debriefing regarding the results of Sandia?s selection process.
