Description
DHS Directorate of Science & Technology (S&T) is tasked with researching and organizing the scientific, engineering and technological resources of the US and leveraging these existing resoures into technological tools to help protect the homeland. AA AS sponsors ten science and technology policy fellowship programs, of which DHS is one. These programs provide the opportunity for accomplished postdoctoral to midcareer scientists and engineers to participate in and contribute to the public policy making process of the federal government. This fellowship program is designed to provide the opportunity to learn through participation how scientific and technological information is used in federal policy-making, to demonstrate the value of science-government interaction, and to bring technical backgrounds and external perspectives to DHS. Fellows will gain expertise in national strategy, federal response efforts, and guiding and contributing to homeland security research and development programs. Fellowship programs have several basic requirements. Applicants must have a PhD or an equivalent doctoral-level degree at the time of application. Individuals with a masters degree in engineering and at least three years of post-degree professional exper ience may also apply. Some programs require additional experience. Applicants must be US citizens. Federal employees are not eligible for the fellowships. In addition, there are numerous areas where the fellow must demonstrate exceptional competence. The fellowships are one-year appointments, potentially renewable for a second year. Costs for the program include stipends for the fellows, recruitment of the program, screening and selection of acceptable candidates and placement. Stipends are based on a candidates education, experience and salary history, with allowances for health insurance, relocation and professional travel. USAMRAA plans to make a sole source award to AAAS. AAAS offers access to the calibur of scientists with a public policy focus that demonstrates the expertise, eduation, and experience required for a successful quality program.
