Description
The INL has developed a modular friction stir welding tool design. This design allows for a less expensive and more adaptable friction stir welding tool that employs easily replaceable and interchangeable components. The design is made up of three key components: the shank, shoulder, and pin. Each component?s material is optimized for its particular function within a given welding situation. The tool?s components are constructed with a smaller amount of the expensive exotic materials usually found in friction stir welding tools. The design permits interchangeability among the key components which creates versatility and easily replaceable parts. These features enhance the tool?s useable life span as well as allow for long and short-term cost savings. The INL is soliciting a written indication of interest from industry partners interested in funding a collaborative technology development project and/or entering into a license agreement for the purpose of developing and commercializing this technology. Interested parties should respond by December 9, 2005. Interested parties should send a description of their company and their ability to commercialize this technology to the contact listed below. Any questions or inquiries should be directed to the contact listed below.
