Description
NAICS Code: 541710 The Mid-Continent Ecology Division (MED) of the National Health and Environmental Research Laboratory (NHEERL), Office of Research and Development (ORD) at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Duluth, MN, is seeking a college student or recent graduate (within 2 years) with a BA/BS degree in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, toxicology, or environmental science at an accredited college/university to provide services under a contractual agreement. A background in analytical chemistry and molecular biology is preferred. The student will work within a multi-disciplinary research team and provide technical laboratory support for research projects that characterize the effects of chemical contaminants on aquatic organisms. The projects for which the student contractor is needed requires the quantitative and qualitative determination of parent chemical concentration and xenobiotic metabolite formation in in vitro and in vivo bioassay systems where chemical effects are also measured. The student will assist in water and tissue analysis of endocrine hormones and similar compounds utilizing chromatography instrumentation, ICP-MS, liquid scintillation and a radioimmunoassay. The student may also be assisting in the preparation of: cellular, sub-cellular fractions, and tissue slices from aquatic organisms; incubation and culture media and buffer systems; and assist in preparation and analysis of biological samples for biochemical endpoints and mRNA and protein production using RT-PCR methods. The period of performance will begin approximately March 1, 2006 and end approximately February 28, 2007 with an option for an additional 12 month period of performance through February 28, 2008. The optional period of performance will be exercised at the discretion of the Government. It is anticipated that the contractor will work up to 40 hours per week.
