- Description
- The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) proposes to negotiate on a sole source basis a contract under the authority of 41 U.S.C. 253(c)(1) with IPG Photonics Corporation, 50 Old Webster Road, Oxford, MA 01540 for an off-resonant high power laser to trap atoms. Specifically, a laser is needed that has the following characteristics: 1064 nm wavelength; a single frequency; and 20W of power. Currently NIST is using a 1064nm laser for the trapping of atoms that has 4W of power. However, for future experiments, NIST needs up to 20W of power. Also, the current laser has a very broad linewidth, which according to recent theoretical work could be a detriment to the experimental conditions. To eliminate these problems, NIST needs a narrow linewidth laser, with a linewidth of less than 100kHz, and the ability to tune the frequency at least 100's of GHz. This linewidth will give a sufficiently long coherence length to implement an optical lattice for our experiment. The laser should also have a single linear polarization. The trapping of atoms in the 1064 nm laser is an instrumental part of the experiment. The laser needs to be reproducible in power, frequency and polarization from day-to-day. Also, due to limited lab space the laser and laser controller needs to be small with a minimal heat load. The laser controller should be mountable in a standard 19 inch equipment rack and run off of 110V AC power. For implementation into the current setup the laser light should be delivered via an optical fiber. The past performance of alternative fiber lasers tested have proven to be unreliable. This procurement is being conducted per FAR Part 13, Simplified Acquisition Procedures (Under $100,000). This synopsis is issued for information purposes. Questions should be submitted in writing to the contracting officer either by fax or email before August 9, 2006. Information submitted in response to this notice will be used solely to determine whether or not use of competitive procedures to fulfill this requirement would be in the Government's best interest and must address qualifications pertinent to this requirement. Anticipated award date will be August 10, 2006.
