Description
INVENTION SUMMARY: Biofouling, the microbial plugging of wells rendering them inoperable, is a common problem in groundwater wells worldwide. Costly vadose zone vapor vacuum extraction and pump and treat processes are all subject to biofouling. Elimination of biofouling, caused by iron bacteria and other microorganisms, will become more important as additional vadose zone remediation and monitoring wells are installed. It is important to protect all wells from being rendered useless due to microbial fouling. BEA has developed a well design, along with application methods, to prevent microbial growth. This design allows water soluble, time released, antimicrobial materials to be available immediately after well completion. Access lines provide a means for adding time released antimicrobial pellets, or pumped liquids and gaseous antimicrobial agents, into the sand pack surrounding the production zone of the completed well. These methods inhibit bacterial growth in the packing; provide an efficient means for reducing biofouling; help to avoid expensive damage to pumps, piping and fixtures; and potentially eliminate well replacements. This well design will help prevent microbial populations responsible for fouling wells from initially developing; prevent costly replacement wells; and allow remediation operations to continue during biofouling treatment. Antimicrobial placement technology can prevent problems before they start, saving time and money. Contact Mr. Gary W. Smith. A potential licensing opportunity exists with BEA, the prime operating contractor for the Department of Energy (DOE) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). BEA is soliciting a written indication of interest from industrial partners interested in entering into a license agreement for the purpose of commercializing the technology described below. This is not an opportunity to provide goods or services to BEA or DOE. This solicitation will close to response 30 days after publication.
