Description
Kona Forest Unit of Hakalau Forest NWR Clear a corridor for boundary/internal fences at the Kona Forest Unit. The corridor to be cleared and fenced includes the whole Kona Forest Unit (5,300 acres; 2,145 ha). The unit supports a variety of native rainforest and dryland natural communities that vary in terms of soil type, moisture regime, and degree of past disturbance. A mix of nonnative and native forest occurs in the lowest elevations (2,000' - 3,500'). Native ohia dominated rainforest is found in the middle elevations (3,500 - 4,500'), ohia-koa mesic forest occurs in upper areas (4,500 - 5,500'), and some dryland mamane-sandlewood natural community in the highest elevations (5,500 - 6,000'). This area has been used for approximately 100 years as a cattle/logging area. These activities have modified the habitat from dense forest with natural understory to large ohia with little to no understory in areas. Feral ungulates (cattle, pigs, horses, sheep, goats and donkeys) will be removed and excluded from these units to assist the Refuge with its mission to protect and recover habitat for endangered forest flora and fauna. The purpose of the Task Order is to clear a corridor for the construction a cattle/pig proof fence along the boundary of the entire unit (5,300 acres) and at two internal crosspoints to create three feral ungulate management units of approximately 1,546 acres, 1,851 acres and 1,908 acres. Total length of completed fences will be about 88,293 feet. The length of the refuge boundary is as follows, north boundary is 26,722 ft, the south boundary is 25,524 ft, the east boundary is 9,835 ft and the west boundary is 7,926 ft. The lengths of the internal fences are, upper (east) internal fence is 9,757 ft and the lower (west) is 8,529 ft. The fence lines may be cleared to a maximum of 15' wide and smoothed with a bulldozer as determined through the NEPA process.
