Description
1. SCOPE: a. Background and purpose: A healthy approach for Navajo youth provides the single best opportunity to combat the growing problem of diabetes and other health conditions among the Navajo people. The Navajo Nation is young, with half of our people less than 20 years old. Lifestyle behaviors related to nutrition, physical activity and other aspects of personal wellness when influenced at an early age could become lifelong habits. With the high cost of medical care and decreasing resources from the federal government, Indian Health Services needs to put more resources into prevention efforts. Most of the health problems among the Navajo people can be attributed to lifestyle choices. The Health Promotion department has been implementing projects to help our target population make healthier decisions. A major factor in the development of increasing rates of chronic health conditions is the lack of opportunities for exercise and wellness activities. A major emphasis area for Navajo Area Health Promotion Program is the promotion of fitness. The 4-day camp will provide knowledgeable information relating to nutrition, physical activity, fitness, wellness and diabetes. 2. REQUIREMENTS a. Tasks 1.
