Description
Notice of Intent - This requirement is for follow on to existing requirement with Boise State University, 1910 University Drive, Boise, Idaho 83725-1247 to furnish report on past records of fire and disturbance for the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, Sawtooth National Forest. The objective of this research project is to reconstruct records of fire and disturbance within lodgepole pine-dominated forests of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA). The proposed study is intended to provide preliminary data for natural resource managers, and to provide data for further work. Disturbance histories in these forests will be developed using three methods: 1) establishing the ages of even-aged stands of trees through tree-coring and aerial photo mapping; 2) dating of past fires using charcoal from past fires preserved in alluvial fans; and 3) comparing fire data to a data set of insect infestation to gain an understanding of the interactions between fire and insect infestations in the Sawtooth region. This proposed work will provide preliminary data on; 1) the history of stand-replacing disturbance for even-aged stands lodgepole pine forests in the Sawtooth National Forest, and 2) a pre-settlement record of fire-related sedimentation events in Fourth of July Creek and adjacent drainages derived from alluvial fan records. The product of this work will be a preliminary stand age reconstruction and fire history reconstruction for lodgepole pine forests in the SNRA. This data will help address the question of whether or not large fires such as the Valley Road fire are truly exceptional in the Sawtooth area, and will provide an indication of the return interval of stand-replacing disturbance. This data will help inform management of fuel accumulations and inform planning for future disturbance in the forest. This synopsis is not to be considered a request for quotations or proposals. This determination of the Government not to open subject requirement to full and open competition was made IAW FAR 6.302-1. No offers received in response to this notice, but offers will be used to determine if a comparable source is available.
