Description
Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), in partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is fabricating the National Compact Stellarator Experiment (NCSX), a fusion energy research device that will be located at PPPL in Plainsboro, New Jersey. PPPL seeks by 4 January 2008 expressions of interest, from qualified firms interested in fabricating for the Experiment six large poloidal field (PF) electromagnets. Two magnets each of three differing sizes and configurations (PF4, PF5 and PF6) will be required. The magnets will be wound in a conventional round geometry, pancake configuration, with close attention required to stated tolerances and cleanliness of the fabrication environment. To simplify manufacture and reduce costs, all three coil types will use the same rectangular-cross section, hollow core copper conductor, glass taped and vacuum impregnated. The copper conductor and ground wrap will be provided by PPPL. The finished coils will vary in size from approximately 48.6 inches O.D. (PF4); to 178.9 inches O.D. (PF5); to 216.3 inches O.D. (PF6). The approximate finished weights of the coils are 1,792.4 lbs. (PF4) 3,326.7 lbs. (PF5) and 1,883.0 lbs (PF6). Preliminary drawings of the coils are available for viewing and download at the PPPL web site, http://www.pppl.gov, under Procurement Opportunities. PPPL intends to issue in early-mid February 2008 a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the fabrication of these coils, with award of a firm fixed price Subcontract by early-mid April 2008. Delivery of the lower PF4, PF5 and PF6 coils will be required by 2 December 2008, with delivery of upper PF4, PF5 and PF6 coils by May 2009. Firms interested in supplying this requirement are requested to provide a written expression of interest to PPPL. The response should include: contact information (firm name, address, representative's name and telephone/fax/email address); a statement of the firms experience in the manufacture of coils of similar size and configuration, including customer names and dates of delivery; a statement of firm's ability to meet required tolerances and use required manufacturing procedures; ownership of, or access to, a suitable clean room assembly environment; and comments (if any) concerning the adequacy and suitability of the preliminary drawings for fabrication. Responses may be sent by letter, fax, or e-mail (e-mail preferred) to the address indicated below. This announcement is not a request for quotations or proposals, and firms will not be reimbursed for costs incurred to respond to this announcement.
