- Description
- The National Institute on Aging, IRP, intends to negotiate and award a purchase order on a noncompetitve basis with Gaven Industries, Saxonburg, PA for the following: SOW for building and installation of RF shieldings (2) for NIA at The Biomedical Research Center 251 Bayview Blvd. Baltimore, Md. 21224 Furnish all shop drawings, supervision, labor, materials, tools, and equipment to fabricate and install the two RF shieldings for the project. The following are required: RF SHIELDING: - Framing of the room for support of the RF shield with FRT lumber. - Shielding of the walls and ceiling of a 16'0"L x 12'0"W x 11'0" high exam room with 7 ounce copper sheet laminated to 1/8" noncom panels and continuously soldered together. - Floor consists of 7oz copper sheets continuously soldered together between layers of cement board for a total built up thickness of 1" on an existing concrete floor. An expansion joint shall be installed in the RF shielded floor at the perimeter of the isolated slab. DOORS & WINDOWS for each unit: - One (1) 4'0" x 7'0" RF shielded pneumatic door assembly with key lock and power, failure release, including frame, door leaf, hardware, stainless steel transition ramp, and oak veneer finish. This door carries no fire rating. ELECTRICAL FILTERS (estimated): - Three (3) dual 30 amp 120 volt power line filters for lighting and power. NOTE: If filters are required for a LUTRON dimming system, there will be an additional charge and extended lead time for these special order filters. - One (1) dual 30 amp 120 volt power line filter for emergency rundown button. - One (1) dual 30 amp filter for oxygen sensor. NOTE: All electrical filters handle two (2) wires. Any device that requires more than two (2) wires will require additional filters.. PENETRATIONS & OPENINGS (estimated): - Three (3) honeycomb waveguides for HVAC (12"x12"). - One (1) 8" diameter x 32" long quench vent penetration. - One (1) opening for RF feed through system filter box. - One (1) ground stud. - One (1) sprinkler line penetration (1 1/2"). - Three (3) medical gas line penetrations (2 @ 1/2", 1 @ 3/4"). - One (1) 18" x 18" Experiment Penetration brass panels with the following components: Six (6) DB 9 connectors with three (3) female inside and three (3) male inside MRI rm. Six (6) BNC female to female bulkhead connectors. Six (6) ST Fiber optic female bulkhead connectors. One (1) 3/8-24 thread. brass ground stud. Six (6) DB 25 connectors with three (3) female inside and three (3) male inside MRI rm. Six (6) 2" dia. fiber optic penetrations. TESTS: Two (2) RF shielding effectiveness tests complete with test plan (submitted with approved shop drawings) and written test reports. WARRANTY: - Written Lifetime Guarantee for the performance of the RF shield. EXCLUSIONS: - Any concrete work. - Any interior finishes. - Any magnetic shielding. - Any wiring and/or materials to or from the electric filters. - Any Lutron electrical filters for DC dimming system. - Any ductwork to or from the waveguides. - Any state and / or local taxes. STANDARD SCHEDULING: - Lead time for fabrication is 3 to 4 weeks from written acceptance of shop drawings. - Installation time is 7-10 days after arriving on the job site. ALTERNATE: 1. Provide and install 4 layers of M36 silicon steel magnetic shielding at the walls and ceiling of the enclosure. Metal framing and 3/4" plywood must be installed by others to support the silicon steel. Contractor shall provide and install all fasteners. Only one responsible source and no other supplier or services will satisfy agency requirements, 41 U.S.C. 253 (c) (1), FAR 6.302-1 (b) (1). The cited authority is applicable because Gaven Industries is the only source that can fulfill the requirements of this contract. Gaven Industries custom-builds Farday cages using heavier-gauge copper sheets which are soldered together to form a continuous ground plane. This all-soldered design gives much better isolation from interfering radio signals than does the bolted design since no gaps, however small, are left between adjacent panels in the finished cage. The exceptionally high shielding efficiency of Gaven cages has been demonstrated in a variety of laboratories, including the fMRI facility at the Johns Hopkins Kennedy Krieger Institute, where Gaven shielding has enabled researchers to perform the most demanding fMRI studies with high signal stability. In addition to high shielding efficiency, the Gaven all-soldered design is more durable than the bolted design since bolted panels ultimately loosen due to temperature changes, floor subsidence, vibration and other ambient effects, leading to decreased shielding performance. Soldered panels are immune to these effects. This has permitted Gaven to offer a lifetime warranty on Faraday cages; such a warranty is available from no other vendor. A market search produced no other vendors. The period of performance is 2 months. This acquisition is being conducted under Simplified Acquisition procedures and is exempt from the requirements of FAR, Part 6, Competition Requirement. Award will be made on an all or none basis to the lowest price technically acceptable.
