Description
Scope of Work: Prepare documentation and datasets for archiving the Annual Parole Survey and Annual Probation Survey (P and P) for the years 2000 through 2005. The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) has conducted the P and P surveys annually since the mid-1990s. The parole survey is administered to about 54 respondents, and the probation survey is administered to about 460 respondents. Data tables and reports have been published from the surveys, and unpublished data tables are made available by request from BJS. The objective of this project is to prepare documentation and datasets that BJS can use to archive P and P data at the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD). The documentation and datasets to be prepared cover six years of P and P data, covering the surveys administered from 2000 through 2005. The project consists of three major components: (1) preparing ASCII datasets containing State-level responses to the two surveys; (2) creating a “notes” database, consisting of data notes provided by respondents who completed the surveys and specific notes made by the data collector; and (3) creating documentation for archiving the data. Materials: BJS will provide the consultant with data and documentation necessary to complete the tasks. BJS will provide the consultant with spreadsheets containing the probation and parole data received from respondents; copies of the original survey forms on which respondents and the data collector have written notes related to their responses; and additional information about the surveys in documentation (a “noteslist.doc” file) provided by BJS. Copies of the forms used to conduct the 2005 Annual Probation and Parole surveys can be found on the BJS website at: 2005 Annual Probation Survey http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/cj8_05.pdf 2005 Annual Parole Survey http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/cj7_05.pdf Sample publication and statistical tables produced from these surveys can be found at: Probation and Parole in the United States, 2006 http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/abstract/ppus06.htm
