- Description
- RECOVERY - The purpose of this notice is to provide the public the announcement ofNASA Goddard Space Flight Center's intent to negotiate with Computer Sciences Corp.(CSC), Rockville, MD, an effort for a Data Management System (DMS) for the NASA Centerfor Computational Sciences (NCCS). The goal of this project is to develop a DMS for theNCCS that provides a data grid approach to integrated, next-generation Earth Sciencedata services for NASA. A data grid is software that allows for the management, sharing, searching, and ditribution of large amounts of distributed data sets. The NASA EarthSciences community maintains large quantitites of both observation data from satellitesand Earth-based observing platforms (like ocean buoys) as well as model data generated byNASA climate applications. Data grids are used to share and manage large amounts ofgeographically distributed data. The DMS will provide a framework for the integrateddelivery of Earth observational data and climate simulation data from NASA models, thereby broadening the accessibility and usability of currently available data to theclimate science community. In particular, new data sets from Goddard Space FlightCenters contribution to the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)will be accessible through the DMS.The approach will leverage the integrated Rule-Oriented Data System (iRODS) softwarepackage. The National Science Foundation funded the development of this open-sourcesoftware package at the University of North Carolina. In addition, the DMS will linkinto a separately funded project that will develop a portal to data using the EarthSystem Grid developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratorys Program for ClimateModel Diagnostics and Iintercomparison. The existing Task Order is a Cost-Plus-Award-Fee arrangement awarded to CSC 12/2007.
