The Contractor shall verify that all new temporary and permanent cables to be installed be, as a minimum, technically and operationally compatible with the cables for which they are replacing, utilizing current state-of-art manufacturing standards, and in compliance with the most current national, state, and local standards or codes. The work covered by this section of the specifications includes, but is not limited to the following items: a. Furnish and install temporary control cables for the complete operation of one hydroelectric generator in such a way that generator availability is maximized during the balance of the project. Temporary cables shall be of the same size and insulation resistance as those originally installed. The cables shall be suitable for the environment they will be located in and will meet or exceed all NFPA 70: NEC 2008 requirements or other applicable standards and/or codes. Cables furnished and installed shall be new. b. Completely remove, furnish new and install all control and low voltage power cables that go through the Power Cable tunnel from origination point to termination point for the complete operation of the main hydroelectric generators. Replace, as needed, other control cables from origination point to termination point. The cables shall be replaced with the same size, length and insulation resistance as originally installed. The cables shall be suitable for the environment they will be located in and will meet or exceed all NFPA 70 requirements. The voltage of the cables varies and includes but is not limited to 125 VDC, 120 VAC, 220 VAC and 480 VAC. It is anticipated that cable insulation contains asbestos. c. Remove, furnish new and install all existing control cable conduits that originate in the cable tunnel to their termination points at the equipment they service in the switchyard for the complete operation of the main hydroelectric generators. The conduits shall be of rigid metal and galvanized to resist corrosion and of the same size as the conduit they are replacing. All conduit shall have fittings designed to cross expansion joints. All connection joints will be sealed to prevent the entrance of water. All bends and connections will be done in a professional manner by personnel experienced in working with conduit and will comply with existing NEMA standards and NFPA 70: NEC 2008 or other applicable standards and/or codes. Conduits furnished and installed shall be new. d. Remove, furnish new and install all cable trays located in the Spread room, Control cable tunnel and Power cable tunnel for the complete operation of the main hydroelectric generators. Cable trays contain asbestos and should not be sawed or broken). Cable trays should be replaced with new cable trays sufficient to sustain the load of the designated wiring. The new cable trays should be of the perforated or ladder design and have a finish that is designed for the environment they are located in. Cable trays shall meet or exceed NFPA 70: NEC 2008 or other applicable standards and/or codes. e. Seal seepage cracks in the concrete cable tunnels. Hydrophobic polyurethane grout shall be used. Crack sealing shall be performed after demolition of existing generator leads and prior to installation of new cable trays and generator leads.
