Description
Background The purpose of this project is to identify regions of the swine genome associated with female reproductive performance and rebreeding in first parity commercial pigs. DNA from 700 boars with performance data on daughters' reproductive performance will be genotyped with a set of 60,000 DNA markers that are evenly distributed across the genome (Illumina Porcine SNP60 Genotyping Beadchip). Because these boars are being supplied by the swine industry, US swine producers can quickly apply selection upon certain alleles significantly associated with superior daughter performance. Identifying DNA markers associated with first parity reproductive performance in pigs supports the USDA, ARS Animal Production and Protection, Food Animal Production (NP#101) research plan. This also supports USMARC mission to develop scientific information and new technology to solve high priority problems for the U.S. swine industry, and Reproduction Research Unit mission to develop genetic markers to improve swine production efficiency. Genetic markers for first parity reproductive performance and rebreeding will result in an increase in the average age of the commercial US sow herd. This change will increase production efficiency, and improve the health and well-being of commercial sows. Statement of Work The provider must provide genotypes for 700 commercial US boars provided to USMARC by commercial swine producers for the same single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) that are currently on the Illumina Porcine SNP60 Genotyping Beadchip. These SNP markers are currently the global industry standard for porcine DNA genotyping and have been previously used on a reference set of USMARC swine. All resulting genotypes must be returned to USMARC. USMARC will provide the contractor the tissue, either in the form of blood cards or hair. These samples will be delivered to the contractor within 1 week after awarded. Delivery of the genotypes (the product the contractor will provide) shall be not later than weeks (to be delivered not later than 56 calendar days) after the tissue samples have been delivered to the contractor.
