- The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC)-Iowa City, is soliciting and intends to award a firm fixed price contract for Architecture/Engineering services, "A/E to Design B40 Wet Lab Center of Excellence" at the VAMC in Iowa City, IA. NAICS Code 541310, size standard $4.5 million. The scope of work for this project shall include but not be limited to the design services for the renovation of approximately 3,900 GSF on the basement level of Building 40. The design will result in creation of wet laboratory space for relocation of research functions from 10th floor of Building 1. Renovation of the space will include installation of ceiling tile, floor surfaces wall finishes, and extension of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing system to support laboratory functions. In addition, the project will develop new restrooms and renovate the elevator lobby. This project will realign research space and will result in having research laboratories moved into the renovated space in Building 40, room B101, that are currently located on the 10th floor of the Medical Center, Building 1. Moving the 10th floor laboratories to Building 40 will allow all wet laboratory space to be located together enhancing collaborative research and moving researchers in closer proximity to shared core services. In addition, animal research is currently being done by the laboratories on the 10th floor. The process of transporting animals to the 10th floor involves covering the cages with an opaque cloth and transporting on the freight elevator in the Medical Center. Transporting these animals involves using shared patient care entrances. By moving the laboratories to the Building 40, room B101, no animals will ever be allowed in the Medical Center. Construction is currently underway for a new Animal Research Facility that is attached to Buildings 40 and 41 allowing for the investigators to not have to transport animals outside these buildings. The firm selected will provide separate bid documents that include specifications and drawings for structural, architectural, mechanical and electrical work needed to provide for the wet laboratory function. The services of a third party Fire Protection Engineer will be required. Existing architectural, electrical and mechanical components will require evaluation for extension and/or size changes. A/E contract will include design (with reviews), reproduction of bid documents, construction period services, final inspections and as-built drawings. Estimated construction cost range is between $500,000 to $1,000,000. Area of consideration: Firms must be within 150 mile radius, of the VAMC-Iowa City, IA.
