- Description
- THIS NOTICE IS PROVIDED FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY. THIS OPPORTUNITY IS AVAILABLE ONLY TO CONTRACTORS UNDER THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES, PROGRAM SUPPORT CENTERS 2009 TASK ORDER CONTRACTORS. Advancing Clinical Decision Support The purpose of this project is to accelerate the successful implementation and effective use of computer-based clinical decision support (CDS) interventions to facilitate evidence based clinical practice and meaningful use of health IT. Funded under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2009, this project is designed to advance CDS to achieve the following goals: - Broad CDS Adoption: Facilitate widespread dissemination of best known CDS implementation practices to support effective use of CDS in a variety of clinical settings including specialty clinical practices and other settings that are known to have had difficulties with implementation of effective CDS. - Improve Care Quality and Patient Safety: Improve the utility of CDS systems to include increased specificity of CDS interventions so as to reduce over-alerting which can lead to poor adoption and reduce the utility of CDS interventions. - Sharing of CDS Interventions: Improve the capacity to share effective CDS interventions across care settings to encourage reuse and to reduce the implementation and maintenance effort required at each local facility - Meaningful Use of CDS: Develop CDS interventions that fulfill CDS-related criteria for meaningful use of health IT. Taken together, achievement of these four goals can reduce major barriers and significantly advance the adoption, implementation, utility, effectiveness of clinical decision support over a wide range of practices, patient groups, technologies, and safety and quality targets. This project will help providers to achieve meaningful use of health information technology through the use and application of CDS capabilities as a foundational step in transforming our health systems to embody 21st century “information-based” clinical practice. CDS provides clinicians, staff, patients and other individuals with knowledge and person-specific information, intelligently filtered at appropriate times, to enhance health and health care. CDS encompasses, but is not limited to, computerized alerts and reminders to care providers and patients; methods to incorporate best practice clinical guidelines into practice; condition-focused order sets, patient data reports and summaries; documentation templates that help foster best practices of care; processes that facilitate communication and collaboration in care; advice to promote more accurate and timely diagnoses; systems that provide contextually relevant reference information; and other tools that enhance decision making in clinical workflow.
