- Description
- DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Project is to prepare and update map of the Calabasas mission complex using modern mapping technology and to analyze the surface artifacts within the fenced compound (midden area) and produce report on findings. Project is to prepare an updated map of the Calabasas mission complex using modern mapping technology and to analyze the surface artifacts within the fenced compound. Real time kinematic GPS equipment should be used to be a base map so features can be mapped. Planimetric mapping will be done to document natural and cultural features and topographic data will be collected to produce.5m-interval contour coverage. The goal of the surface artifact mapping and analysis is to understand how artifacts are distributed across the site (within main fence enclosure). For example, is there spatial patterning in artifact type and age or are there distinct spatial clusters. The fenced area where artifacts are to be mapped measures 53.3m (175ft) by 53.3m (175 ft). The location of individual artifacts will be mapped and analyzed in-situ using a grid system of other means of plotting provenience and GPS surveying instruments. Some artifacts can be taken into the lab for analysis, but most will be returned to their original location. Unusual artifacts or examples of diagnostics may be curated for a type collection. Any curated artifacts will be housed at the NPS facility at the Western Archaeological and Conservation Center, Tucson, AZ. The church structure itself is excluded from surface artifacts analysis. All artifacts are to be analyzed for general type, function and age- including the Native American pottery which dates 1750 to 1870 AD, which should be differentiated as much as possible. Analysis of Native American pottery is to include temper analysis and other non-destructive analytic means of describing, typing and dating the ceramics. The report should include maps showing artifact types and distribution, and a section on ceramic analysis results. LOCATION: The worksite is a detached unit of Tumacacori NHP located eight miles south of the main visitor center in the Rio Rico, off of Pendleton Road. It is closed to normal visitation and accessed by an unpaved road that is in good condition.
