Description
As part of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Strategic Laboratory Initiative (SLI), Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne) plans to construct a new Energy Sciences Building (ESB). The mission of the ESB is to provide a new state-of-the-art science facility at Argonne for approximately 190 scientists, technicians, and administrative staff. The laboratory space will replace existing substandard and functionally challenged space with new space designed to accommodate today’s science challenges, which are rooted at the subatomic level. Today’s research needs specialized facilities, free from acoustical, vibration, and electromagnetic interference, that facilitate rather than hinder instruments capable of gathering data down to the atomistic level. The ESB will be an approximately 145,000 gross square feet (gsf) four-story facility (one story below grade) with a mechanical penthouse and approximately 46,000 asf of 21 st Century laboratory space. The other areas of the building include: · ~20,000 asf of Offices; · ~5,000 asf of Amenities; and · ~7,000 asf of Support Spaces A number of the ESB spaces will house very sensitive equipment that require the most stringent criteria for controlling such factors as vibration and electro-magnetic interference. The construction of the ESB will support these criteria. Safety is of paramount importance in the construction and operation of the ESB. The ESB Project Team is dedicated to a construction safety goal of zero lost workday cases. Safe work practices will be integrated into all aspects of the construction process. Due to the specialized nature of the facility, and the fact that proper construction phase implementation is fundamental to the mission of the facility, Argonne will implement a prequalification process to ensure invited general contractors have the requisite capabilities and experience, as determined by Argonne. A key focus of Argonne’s evaluation will be a contractor’s track record of successfully completing projects similar to the ESB as described above. Argonne’s Office of Project Management (OPM) in combination with Jacobs is tasked as Construction Management supporting the ESB Project. OPM and Jacobs will implement the prequalification process with Argonne, and will support the procurement and construction phases.
