Description
RFI--Airborne Sensor Technology The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is committed to using cutting-edge technologies and scientific talent in its quest to make America safer. The DHS Directorate of Science and Technology (S&T) is tasked with researching and organizing the scientific, engineering, and technological resources of the United States and leveraging these existing resources into technological tools to help protect the homeland. DHS S&T's Borders and Maritime Security Division (BMD) supports the DHS mission by developing and transitioning capabilities that are successfully demonstrated to improve the security of our nation's terrestrial and maritime borders. A recently completed Borders and Maritime Surveillance Report recommended DHS S&T create a roadmap to guide investments in future sensor technologies linked to specific homeland security capabilities needed one-to-two decades hence. An investment strategy for sensor technologies would leverage S&T's limited funds with those of DOD, DARPA and similar entities. The goal is to bring more capable sensors to the field earlier. A long-term vision for an end state capability, coupled with stable funding, is key to achieving capabilities with a worthwhile cost-to-benefit ratio. A surveillance roadmap would serve to document that vision, to link near- and far-term programs that build toward that final end state, and will enable a long term investment strategy for achieving funding stability. DHS will use the information gathered from responses to this RFI and subsequent presentations (as requested by DHS) to recommend funding for future sensor development. See attached Request for Information (RFI) for details.
