- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Lyndon B. Johnson SpaceCenter is releasing a NASA Research Announcement (NRA) for Research and TechnologyDevelopment to Support Crew Health and Performance in Space Exploration Missions. ThisNRA supersedes the previously posted NNJ11ZSA002N titled Research and TechnologyDevelopment to Support Space Exploration Missions.NASA Research Announcement NNJ11ZSA002NA, entitled 'Research and Technology Developmentto Support Crew Health and Performance in Space Exploration Missions' will be availableon or about August 22, 2011, by opening the NASA Research Opportunities homepage athttp://nspires.nasaprs.com/ and then clicking the link through the menu listings'Solicitations' to 'Open Solicitations.' This NASA NRA jointly solicits proposals for NASA and the National Space BiomedicalResearch Institute (NSBRI) in support of the Human Research Program. For thissolicitation, NASA and NSBRI are placing special emphasis on the high priority researcharea of Visual Impairment and Intracranial Pressure. Proposals are solicited by NASA inthe areas of Visual Acuity and Ocular Structure and Function; Fluid Distribution; TeamSocial, Technical, and Task Roles; and Effects of Constrained, Asynchronous Communicationon Operational Tasks. Short-term investigations or technologies that provide innovativeapproaches to any of the defined risks contained in the Integrated Research Plan(http://humanresearchroadmap.nasa.gov ) of the Human Research Program are also beingsolicited by NASA. In addition, proposals are solicited by the NSBRI in the areas ofMicrogravity-Induced Visual Alterations/Intracranial Pressure, CardiovascularAlterations, Human Factors and Performance, Musculoskeletal Alterations, Neurobehavioraland Psychosocial Factors, Sensorimotor Adaptation, and Smart Medical Systems andTechnology. Proposals responding to the NASA emphases and NSBRI emphases must besubmitted separately, and will result in separate evaluations and awards. Step-1 proposals are due on September 22, 2011, and invited Step-2 proposals are due onDecember 19, 2011. Proposals are required to be submitted electronically and must besubmitted by an authorized official of the proposing organization. Participation is open to all categories of organizations, including educationalinstitutions, industry, nonprofit organizations, NASA centers, and other Governmentagencies. Electronic proposals may be submitted via the NASA centers, and other Governmentagencies. Proposals must be submitted electronically. Step-1 Proposers can use either NSPIRES (seeURL above) or Grants.gov (http://www.grants.gov ) for proposal submission. Everyorganization that intends to submit a proposal in response to this NRA must be registeredwith NSPIRES, and such registration must identify the authorized organizationalrepresentative(s) who will submit the electronic proposal. Each electronic proposalsystem places requirements on the registration of principal investigators and otherparticipants (e.g. co-investigators). Potential proposers and proposing organizations areurged to access the system(s) well in advance of the proposal due date(s) of interest tofamiliarize themselves with its structure and enter the requested information. Questionsconcerning responding to this NRA may be addressed to the contacts referenced in the fullsolicitation document. This is a broad agency announcement as specified in FAR 6.102 (d)(2).
