- Description
- The USGS, Geophysical Unit of Menlo Park (GUMP), Geology and Geophysics Center, has a requirement for Three (3) Each, Magnetoelluric (MT) Systems in order to carry out large MT experiments. The Government intends to award this requirement noncompetitively IAW FAR 13.5, to Zonge International, Incorporated, Tucson, AZ. GUMP is actively involved with an effort to collect geophysical data in the vicinity of Mono Basin and the Snake River Plain, to carry out interpretative studies utilizing gravity and magnetic data to characterize the geologic structures and framework influencing geothermal resources. Because large, deep structures exist in the area that may be invisible to the gravity and magnetics methods traditionally used by GUMP, the capability to collect magnetotelluric (MT) data will add value to their studies. MT data characterizes the resistivity structure at depths down to several tens of kilometers and identifies geothermal sources as well as structures are relevant to geothermal resources in above mentioned areas. Due to the high cost, most institutions only own two three of their own MT systems. In the past GUMP have borrowed/rented Zonge MT systems for their required surveys. Currently, the National Science Foundation has been funded for a MT Zonge systems instrument pool that will be housed at Oregon State University and the USGS will have ready access to borrowing some of these additional systems needed for their research. This is the only known available instrument pool within North America. Because MT receivers are not compatible unless identical, the USGS intends to purchase Zonge MT systems which will comprise the instrument pool they will borrow from, for MT experiments. The USGS intends to use both newly procured systems and borrowed MT systems from the instrument pool in order to carry out large MT experiments. A minimum of five (5) systems is required (two systems for recording, while two additional systems are deployed, and one reference system in case of equipment failures). Therefore the chances of borrowing two (2) MT systems are much more realistic than borrowing five (5), due to availability concerns. Additionally the Zonge MT system is the only known system that is sensitive to 200KHZ and can provide the necessary resolution in shallow crust the USGS requires for their research. No other MT system is known to have this feature. Other interested concerns having the ability to furnish these services shall submit a capabilities statement to the Contracting Officer no later than the closing date of this announcement. All submissions will be evaluated to determine if competitive opportunities exist. This is NOT an RFQ. This does represent the Governments only written notice of this procurement. All responsible sources may submit a response which, if timely received, must be considered by the agency. Place of Performance: Menlo Park, CA This notice and any resulting contract or order conforms to the requirements in place through FAC 05-53 (effective 4 Aug, 2011). All questions regarding this procurement shall be in writing, and addressed to Cheryl Fitch at cfitch@usgs.gov no later than 08/25/2011.
