- TECHNOLOGY/BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY Disposable STD (Sexually-Transmitted Diseases) Diagnostic Kits Opportunity : Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS), LLC under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is offering the opportunity to collaborate on research and commercialize a rapid, disposable, non-invasive multi-plex device for diagnosing sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs). Background : In 2009 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 1.6 million STD cases involving Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis (1.2 million for Chlamydia alone). These represent only a fraction of the true burden of STDs. CDC estimates aproximately1.9 million new STD infections occur each year, which cost the U.S. healthcare system $16.4 billion. This is compounded by the fact that less than half of people who should be screened receive recommended STD screening services. Description : This technology gives clinical personnel, as well as the general public, the capability to test if a person has a number of commonly diagnosed STDs. A solution containing biomolecules is applied to a textile strip containing chemically-reactive lines or dots, which react with biochemical reagents by lateral flow. The reaction causes a signal, such as a line to be visualized if the biomolecules applied to the strip contain STDs that the panel is designed to test. In one embodiment, the device can test for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Trichomoniasis, Bacterial vaginosis, and Herpes. Advantages : •·. Small, easy-to-use, perfect for privacy considerations à rapid diagnosis à reduced feedback time à Lower medical costs for the patient •· Utilizes easily accessible biological samples (urine) à Lower clinical costs for both patient and health care provider •· Uses lateral flow technology (similar to home pregnancy tests) à Simple, Cost-Effective to build à Lower production costs for the manufacturer Potential Applications : •· Use in the privacy of the home •· Point-of-care diagnostic testing Development Status : Need to develop prototypes and to test product reliability. U.S. patent application filed. LLNL is seeking industry partners with a demonstrated ability to bring such inventions to the market. Moving critical technology beyond the Laboratory to the commercial world helps our licensees gain a competitive edge in the marketplace. All licensing activities are conducted under policies relating to the strict nondisclosure of company proprietary information. Please visit the IPO website at http://ipo.llnl.gov/workwithus/partneringprocess.php for more information on working with LLNL and the industrial partnering and technology transfer process.
