Description
Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is developing an Energy Storage Monitoring System (ESMS) to ascertain the state-of-health and remaining useful life of energy storage technologies for multiple applications (e.g., automotive, military, space, etc.). A key component of the ESMS is accurate, in-situ measurements of the impedance spectra. INL has patent positions on an Impedance Measurement Box (IMB) which includes several unique approaches to rapidly determine the impedance spectra while the energy storage device (e.g., battery) is at rest or under load (e.g., while discharging or charging). These techniques are critical for accurate state-of-health prognostics in the overall ESMS, but could also be useful as stand-alone devices (e.g., acceptance testing in the field). The IMB was awarded an R&D100 Award in June 2011. INL is seeking industrial collaboration and funding to advance the development of the IMB from a pre-commercial prototype to a commercially viable diagnostic tool, either as a stand-alone unit or as part of the conceptual ESMS. Industrial participant(s) will have a right to seek up to an exclusive, field of use license to commercialize the IMB (or ESMS) technology. Additional information is available under nondisclosure agreement. Business Contact: David R. Anderson, e-mail: david.anderson@inl.gov, Telephone: 208-526-0837.
