Description
The contractor shall perform the work required by this SOW to advance theunderstanding of aircraft wake vortices by: (i) Characterizing sensors for datacollection, (ii) planning data collection activities, (iii) collecting wake vortex andmeteorological data, and (iv) assessing and improving numerical wake vortex models suchas the fast-time, deterministic, and probabilistic models. The contractor shall:Characterize existing sensors and sensing capabilities typically used forground-based, terminal-area Wake Vortex measurements of position and strength. Establishfull set of wake vortex, meteorological, aircraft, and air traffic operational parametersrequired to be measured and test conditions for several test scenarios. Correlate sensorparameters with required data.Develop a ground-based, terminal-area, Data Collection Test Program to collectdata that can be used to validate existing wake vortex prediction tools. Data to becollected will be as determined in objective 1.Collect meteorological and wake vortex position and strength data as determinedin objective 2.Conduct a robust validation of wake vortex models. The purpose of this validationis to evaluate the predictions of wake vortex behavior from the wake vortex models.Should this effort identify deficiencies in the wake vortex models, the contractor shalldocument these deficiencies and use this information to guide model refinements.Enhanceas requiredexisting fast-time wake vortex prediction tools using the data ascollected in objective 3. This includes both deterministic and probabilistic tools that,as applied to reduced aircraft spacing, can:a.Predict the probability of wake location.b.Predict the probability of wake location and strength. The unified solution in item b above ensures that the more complex strength solutionremains consistent with the location solution.
