- NASA/ARC has a requirement for Restoration of images recorded during the LunarOrbiter (LO) program for NASA Lunar Science Institute (NLSI) and the Planetary DataSystem.Background:Approximately 1470 2 video tapes containing Lunar Orbiter Images are stored at NASA AmesResearch Park building 596. The original image data from the 5 Lunar Orbiters were usedto plan landing sites for the Apollo landers, and the data are stored on tapes which havebeen curated at JPL, and now at NASA Ames, and which may only be read using Ampex FR-900tape drives. On an ongoing basis, during the playing of the tapes for recovery of imagery, theContractor is required to assess the quality of the tapes, provide data on their archivalcondition in a report. This report will be a deliverable to NLSI, and NLSI will thenpass it on to Lawrence Brewer, Director, Life Cycle Management, National Archives andRecords Administration.Scope of Work:The Contractor shall play back, store in binary form, and process a minimum of 600 totalimages, representing a minimum of 40% of the original images.The data to be delivered are as follows:1.Binary Data files representing the digitized version of the original analog tapes(unprocessed, for archival purposes). Delivery is to the NASA Planetary Data System.2.Processed TIFF files representing the images on the tapes. Delivery is to theNASA Lunar Science Institute and the Planetary Data System.3.A final report summarizing all work done, with enough detail and backgroundinformation to be suitable for archival purposes.NASA/ARC intends to acquire the service from SkyCorp, Inc., a small business. SkyCorp isthe only provider of these Ampex FR-900 tape drives, and is the only known company withthe capability to restore the Lunar Orbiter images to their full potential. It is thequoter's responsibility to monitor this site for the release of amendments (if any).Potential quoters will be responsible for downloading their own copy of this notice andamendments (if any).
