- Description
- The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) intends to award a small business set-aside contract for support services in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling and simulation for the Experimental Investigations on Reactor Containment Thermal-Hydraulics and Severe Accident Management (ERCOSAM) Project. The purpose of ERCOSAM is to establish a containment mixing data base for a test sequence representative of a severe accident in a light water reactor. The project focuses on stratification, mixing, and condensation phenomena as well as the operation of mitigation systems such as sprays, coolers, and PARs. The NRC is interested in predicting the distribution and stratification of the hydrogen within the containment as well as the effectiveness of accident management systems such as containment sprays, coolers, and passive auto-catalytic re-combiners (PARs). The purpose of this research is for the development of analytical tools including CFD for an improved assessment of these phenomena along with a set of best practice guidelines for the application of CFD for containment analysis. The purpose of this contract is to complete pre-test and post-test predictions using the FLUENT CFD code for tests different facilities. The pre-test predictions will be supplied to the ERCOSAM project to help with test planning and preparation. Post-test predictions will be completed on all of the test sequences. User-defined functions for the FLUENT CFD code will be developed and validated for each specific test. The user-defined functions are needed to account for significant containment phenomena related to these scenarios that may not be included in the FLUENT code. These phenomena could include but are not limited to behavior of the containment sprays, containment cooling system, PARs, and/or the effects of wall condensation. A solicitation is expected to be posted on March 2, 2012. It is estimated that the proposals will be due by April 2, 2012.
