- Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine - II Pre-Announcement (Fort Detrick, Md.) - - The U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, with the Office of Naval Research, the Air Force Medical Service, the Office of Research and Development - Department of Veterans Affairs, the National Institutes of Health, and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs announced, 2 March 2012, their intention to accept applications for the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine II program. The full announcement with application instructions will be posted on grants.gov March 2012. The AFIRM is dedicated to repairing battlefield injuries through the use of regenerative medicine technologies and associated sciences. With anticipated funding in fiscal year 2013, the intent is to provide funding of basic through translational regenerative medicine research and development. Under this assistance award, activities such as basic scientific research through preclinical studies, and Phase I - II clinical trials are acceptable. The AFIRM II encourages proposals that specifically address one or more of the following focus areas: Extremity Regeneration, Craniomaxillofacial Regeneration, Skin Regeneration, Composite Tissue Allotransplantation and Immunomodulation, Genitourinary/Lower Abdomen Reconstruction. A key feature of the AFIRM II assistance award is relevance to the health care needs of the military service members, veterans, and beneficiaries. It is anticipated that offerors will assemble an expert team from multiple academic institutions or industry partners to satisfy the objectives of the AFIRM II Program Announcement, seeking collaboration with government laboratories and medical centers and Medical Treatment Facilities (MTFs) such as those in the Army, Navy, Air Force, NIH and VA. The Clinical and Rehabilitative Medicine Research Program (CRMRP) is providing information in this pre-announcement to allow investigators time to plan and develop applications. The AFIRM II Program Announcement and General Application Instructions for the award mechanism are anticipated to be posted on Grants.gov in March 2012. Application deadlines will be available when the Program Announcement is released. This pre-announcement should not be construed as an obligation by the government.
