Description
The Control and Optimization Labotories (COL) applies advanced control systems analysis and design, combined with the power of numerical optimization is necessary to improve the performance of current and future nonlinear dynamic systems. the performance margins of complex nonlinear systems by the application of innovative techniques in optimal control theory is investigated to determine where performance is limited, not by the physics of the system but by the inherent limitations of traditional feedback control systems, is also necessary. Increasing performance margins not only improves the mission performance of these systems but has the potential to increase the margin of safety and thereby reduce the costs and hazards to operators. Areas of interest to the COL are: General solutions to the optimal reorientation of spacecraft under a variety of actuation schemes. High-accuracy solutions to low-thrust problems orbit transfer problems and their generation in near real-time. Approaches for synthesizing a set of optimized command signals to estimate the system parameters of a complex, nonlinear, flexible spacecraft system. The application of advanced numerical optimization methods to the problem of generating rapid, collision-free path planned motions for multi-degree-of-freedom articulated robot systems. Variations on the classic Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), specifically the applicability of weighting functions to the target cities intended to direct the algorithm to arrive at the optimal solution to the TSP. The combination of sensitivity analysis and covector mapping to facilitate a rapid and efficient approach to perform a parameter value-function analysis and thereby improve the design process. Scope The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) Control & Optimization Laboratory at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) has a requirement for contractual services to apply optimal control theory to advanced control systems analysis and design.
