- Description
- Sandia National Laboratories, the lead research and development laboratory for the Department of Energy's physical security programs, is seeking one or more business partners to do commercial development and deployment of advanced reactive barrier technologies that include the application of Sandia's intellectual property. Sandia is seeking a company or companies to cooperatively develop and commercially license the technology described in this posting and expects the successful company/companies to engage in the creation of a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) or other working relationship with Sandia to further develop the technology. Commercial licensees will have the opportunity to obtain a license to the intellectual properties for reasonable compensation. It is expected that the company/companies that work with Sandia to develop the technology mentioned will build it into a commercial product. Potential partners must provide Sandia information describing their ability to: Apply the advanced barrier technology for containment of radionuclides, heavy metals and/or other contaminants in sediment and commercially market the resulting process. The technology to be supplied by Sandia includes: A novel method for construction of a calcium apatite permeable reactive barrier for the containment of radionuclides, heavy metals and other contaminants has been developed and successfully field tested. Calcium apatite is a strong sorbent for many contaminants, including uranium, lead, strontium, cadmium, plutonium, neptunium, thorium, americium, zinc, fluoride and other contaminants from natural sources or manufacturing and mining operation and accidental releases. A permeable reactive barrier of calcium apatite can be used for removing contaminants from groundwater or as a preventative measure to prevent contamination from hydrofracturing, mining and other excavation operations. Using this patented technology (US Patent 6,416,252 and US Patent 6,592,294); a calcium apatite barrier is formed by utilizing the natural soil microorganisms. An aqueous solution containing a calcium citrate compound and sodium phosphate is injected or allowed to infiltrate into the site for barrier construction. As the indigenous soil bacteria biodegrade the calcium citrate compound, calcium apatite will precipitate throughout the soil. This new technology is unmatched in its simplicity of implementation, effectiveness, safety and low cost. The technology has been proven in a field test at the Department of Energy's Hanford site in Washington State where a calcium apatite barrier was constructed using the new technology to prevent radioactive strontium from entering the Columbia River. The test barrier has been proven to be 90 to 95% effective at sequestering the radioactive strontium and the barrier is being expanded to protect approximately 2500 feet of Columbia River shoreline. Currently, research is underway to expand the capability of the barrier for sequestering technetium. To express interest in this opportunity, please respond by mail to Gary E. Rochau by June 15, 2012 at: Sandia National Laboratories, MS 1136, PO Box 5800, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87185, email: gerocha@sandia.gov, phone: 505.845.7543. Please indicate the date and title of the FBO notice. Include company and contact information as well as a description of how your company meets Sandia's criteria and could best contribute to the formation of a CRADA or license and subsequent commercialization of this technology. Sandia National Laboratories is a multi-program laboratory managed and operated by Sandia Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corporation, for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-AC04-94AL85000.
