Description
Following is additional information: 1. What would be the anticipated TOP FIVE priority languages from the start? All languages in our program are a priority. All languages selected into LEAP are on the Strategic Language List and are therefore important to the DoD and the Air Force. 2. Is there a vision to grow this capability in LEAP to include a virtual world collaboration environment with the capabilities for online exploration, scenario interactions, or cultural & language interplay? If so, could you describe the virtual world vision more specifically? At the moment, LEAP is most concerned with developing live, on-line language classes with a solid curriculum to maintain and advance our participants' reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities. While we encourage eMentors to be creative with their teaching techniques, and support innovations such as the use of social media or guest speakers to augment classroom time, we do not see foresee the eMentor program moving away from live language instruction as the bulk of its program. (For example, avatars or non-live, asynchronous language software.) 3. Will mobile devices (equipment) be issued to selected or all LEAP participants, and if so, what range and type of devices would be necessary? Would a mobile-device collaboration capability fill a need for the eMentor support in the LEAP? LEAP does not intend to purchase any equipment for LEAP participants. Our intent is to allow participants to "Bring Your Own Device" (BYOD), whether it's a personal PC or MAC, a workstation computer (with all accompanying NIPRNET restrictions), a laptop, or a mobile device such as an iPad. Due to necessary screen restrictions for reading and writing, and the use of webcams, we do not allow participants to use smaller devices such as iPods or cellphones. We do expect participants to use other, larger-screen mobile devices. 4. Has AFCLC been in touch with DLI Monterrey regarding their language sustainment and maintenance program, and do their features complement the AFCLC goals? LEAP has used DLIFLC's Broadband Language Training System (BLTS) with Sakai and Illuminate for some eMentor cohorts in the past. Certain features worked well in the classroom, such as chat and powerpoint presentations, although certain technical limitations with broadband and video loading occurred, and the lack of live, on-line helpdesk personnel hampered efforts to fix such issues in timely fashion. For other AFCLC language training needs, we have successfully used DLIFLC instructors for LEAP language immersions called LITEs as well as Air University language classes at AWC and ACSC. We also have links to the DLIFLC website from our AFCLC website so that interested persons can avail themselves of DLI products such as GLOSS and Headstart2.
