Description
The U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Weather Service (NWS), intends to award a sole source contract to ARINC to provide for the expansion of a network of high-quality, low latency, water vapor and other atmospheric data from in situ sensors installed on commercial aircraft. Understanding the amount and distribution of atmospheric water vapor is critical to the prediction of thunderstorms, flash floods, hail, tornados, clouds, icing, and climate monitoring. Observing and predicting these phenomena is essential to achieving a safe and efficient U.S. economy, and in particular, management of the National Aerospace System. Since 2007, ARINC has installed more than 50 of a contracted 92 water vapor sensors on commercial aircraft and managed the certification consistent with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulations. They have integrated the sensors with aircraft platforms, avionics communications, and other mechanisms to enable real-time collection and reporting of water vapor and other atmospheric elements. Questions or inquiries should be directed to the Contracting Officer before the response period ends.
